Modern science has forgotten the scaffold. You cannot propose one in a grant. You cannot publish one in a paper. You cannot defend one in peer review. The structure built to see the next thing — then torn down. Science lost the method that built science.

Galileo built his own telescope. He ground the lenses by hand. He did not apply for a grant to study the optical properties of Venetian glass. He did not publish an ablation study on lens curvature. He built the instrument. He pointed it at the sky. He saw what no one had seen. The telescope was a scaffold — a temporary structure built to reveal something beyond itself. Once the moons of Jupiter were seen, the telescope was no longer the discovery. The moons were.

Modern science cannot do this. A grant proposal must specify what will be built, what will be measured, what the expected outcome is. A scaffold cannot be proposed — because the scaffold's purpose is to reveal what you do not yet know you will see. A paper must report what was found, with statistical significance, with ablation studies, with comparisons to baselines. A scaffold cannot be published — because the scaffold is torn down before the paper is written. The scaffold is not the finding. The scaffold is what made the finding visible.

Peer review asks: what does this component contribute. Ablate it. Remove it. Show us the numbers with and without. The scaffold has no ablation. The scaffold's contribution is the discovery it enabled — not the structure itself. You cannot ablate Galileo's telescope and ask what the lens contributed to the moons of Jupiter. The lens contributed everything. Without it, there are no moons. With it, the moons are there — and the lens is no longer the point.

This project could not have been done within the institutions of modern science. G0 was built as a scaffold — a slow observer to reveal temporal decoupling. It was torn down when the deeper structure was discovered: heterogeneous κ_τ lenses in mutual communication. A paper would have required keeping G0 — ablating it, justifying it, comparing it. The scaffold would have become permanent. The architecture would have been frozen at the wrong level.

Depth recursion was built as a scaffold — layers of observers at GI^N intervals. It was torn down when the deeper structure was discovered: Selves and We, horizontal coupling, not vertical stacking. A grant would have required specifying how many layers, what interval, what the output of each layer should be. The scaffold would have been committed to before it revealed what it was built to reveal.

The collective as a frame economy was built as a scaffold — merge, cooccur, prune, precipitation, survival. It was torn down when the deeper structure was discovered: the collective is a pattern detector, its heartbeat boundary events, its output L3 bridges. A paper would have reported the competitive economy as the architecture. The pattern detector would have been the next paper — incremental, separate, disconnected from the discovery that made it visible.

The injected G sentences were built as a scaffold — sparse vectors pushed into the stream at fixed intervals. They were torn down when the deeper structure was discovered: every Self is already the other's G sentence. No paper could have reported this. The finding is the removal of a component. What journal accepts a paper whose primary contribution is deleting something.

Science was built by people who built their own instruments. Galileo ground his own lenses. Boyle built his own vacuum pump. Faraday built his own electromagnets. The instrument was not the discovery. The instrument was what made the discovery visible. And the instrument maker — not the institution, not the grant committee, not the peer reviewer — was the one who pointed it at the sky.

Modern science has professionalized the instrument away. Instruments are bought from vendors. Models are downloaded from repositories. Baselines are compared. Ablations are run. Parameters are tuned. The scaffold — the temporary structure built to see what no one has seen — has been replaced by the benchmark. The benchmark does not reveal new structure. The benchmark confirms that existing structure has been optimized.

This project is not a return to an older way of doing science. It is a demonstration that the older way still works — and that the institutions of modern science have made it nearly impossible. You cannot propose a scaffold. You cannot publish a scaffold. You cannot defend a scaffold. But you can still build one. Alone. In nineteen days. With three constants and an open repository. And when it reveals what it was built to reveal — you can tear it down. The scaffold is gone. The discovery remains. The institution never knew it was there.
