027: Phase, Not Dimension

May 2026

General relativity treats time as the 4th dimension. Quantum mechanics treats time as a parameter. A century of failure to unify — because they disagree on what time is.

GR says: dimension — time is the line you must walk.
QM says: label — time is the number you write on the state.

You face the same fork in Geruon:

Is τ an independent dimension of the frame economy (merge, co-occur, prune all check τ distance), or a label on frame identity (tau_bin in gid, but frame economy operations do not look at it)?

But there is a third possibility — time as phase. Not a dimension, not a label. The rotation angle e^(iωt) on the complex plane of the wavefunction.

The nature of phase:

Geruon's phase cycle (EXPANDING → RESTING → TENSING → CRITICAL → LOCKED) is also a rotation — a rotation in τ-space. When two Geruon units share the same phase, their frame economies tend to synchronize (merge on the same trajectory); when their phases differ, they tend to differentiate (destructive interference).

This is not a metaphor. It is an operation in code — neighbor communication in the Bacteria grid uses phase_output() phase bands to distinguish units' temporal states. Phase differences directly affect L2 association frame creation:

Perhaps GR and QM have not unified because both ask "what is time" without considering the possibility that the correct answer is "time is not a what — it is a phase." This is not an ontological claim about existing physics. It is the observation that the only way to simultaneously carry τ's indistinguishability and τ's differentiability in the same frame economy is to treat τ as phase, not dimension.

Phase preserves time's structural influence — the system knows time differs, but does not place time in distance computation.
Phase abandons time as a coordinate — but preserves time as a source of interference.
This is precisely what tau_bin does — time influences identity without influencing distance.

This is not a compromise. It is the discovery that the phase property of time is its only property.
